Assessment at a glance

Cambridge AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Level of Chemistry can be either taken as a standalone certificate or carried forward to A Level certificate. The assessment consists of 3 externally-assessed papers, all of which are mandatory.

    Formulae, Equations and Amount of Substance; Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table; Bonding and Structure; Introductory Organic Chemistry and Alkanes; alkenes
  • Written examination
  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 80 marks
  • The paper has two sections:
    • Section A: multiple choice questions
    • Section B: mixture of short-open, open-response and calculation questions
  • 40% of the international AS assessment
  • 20% of the international A-Level assessment
  • Content
    Energetics; Intermolecular Forces; Redox Chemistry and Groups 1, 2 and 7; Introduction to Kinetics and Equilibria; Organic Chemistry: Alcohols, Halogenoalkanes and Spectra
  • Written examination
  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 70 marks
  • This paper has three sections:
    • Section A: multiple choice questions
    • Section B: mixture of short-open, open-response, calculations and extended-writing questions
    • Section C: contemporary context question.
